Kohl’s Black Friday 2018 Ad Has Expensive Secrets
This post was created by the Contributor in partnership with BestBlackFriday.com, which specializes in holiday season sales. The deals highlighted within this post were independently selected and do not contain affiliate links.

For many, the smart money spent during Black Friday 2018 will be at Kohl’s thanks to its impressive Black Friday ad scan deals and massive ‘Cash’ savings. But it’s not so simple. While Kohl’s does score some big wins, it falls short with gaping holes in its product selection and shipping policies. Here are the nasty surprises you need to know about in Kohl’s Black Friday sale…

This is the fourth article in my Black Friday ‘Nasty Surprises’ and ‘Expensive Secrets’ series. Working with BestBlackFriday.com, these posts analyse the biggest Black Friday 2018 sales to highlight where their deals fall short. You can my read guide’s to Walmart’s 32-page ad scan here, Best Buy’s 52-page ad scan here and Target’s 47-page-ad scan here.

Kohl’s Black Friday 2018 Sales Problems

Inferior Shipping Policy – Kohl’s did not mention shipping in its Black Friday ad, which means it is highly unlikely to change its current policy of free standard shipping on orders over $50. This is the worst free shipping policy among premier Black Friday stores. Target (see shipping policy), Walmart (see shipping policy), and Best Buy (see shipping policy) all have deals for fast two-day shipping either with no minimum order or much less than $50.

No PS4 Deals – While Kohl’s has many premium electronics in its ad this year, it does not have any Sony PlayStation 4 deals. In contrast, every rival does. Walmart will sell the PS4 1TB Slim Spider-Man Bundle for $199 saving you $100 (See Ad Scan Deal), while Target (See Ad Scan Deal) and Best Buy (See Ad Scan Deal) almost match it.

No Target REDcard Discount Equivalent – While Kohl’s Cash coupons (see complete details) are a strong incentive, it has no equivalent to Target’s REDcard. REDcard holders save 5% on every single buy (see complete details) at the point of purchase, and that includes Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. Kohl’s Cash can only be spent on future purchases for a limited period.

No iPhone Deals – Like last year, Kohl’s has not been able to arrange a deal to stock any iPhones. This leaves it at a significant disadvantage as iPhones are a successful gateway to further store purchases. Whatsmore, rivals have some great deals with Walmart’s $300 discounts on the Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR leading the way (View Ad Scan Deal). Best Buy’s direct savings (See Ad Scan Deal) and Target’s coupons (See Ad Scan Deal) are head turners too.

Kohl’s Black Friday 2018 Nintendo Switch deal is bettered elsewhereNintendo

Nintendo Switch – This is a little harsh, but Kohl’s Nintendo Switch deal is not the best on what will be a high demand product. It is offering a $30 discount and bundling a Turtle Beach headset and carrying case for $329.99 and $90 Kohl’s Cash (See Ad Scan Deal). Walmart has the more appealing Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle for $299 (See Ad Scan Deal), as do Target (See Ad Scan Deal) and Best Buy (See Ad Scan Deal). The $90 Kohl’s Cash may swing this for you, but not for me.

Should you write off Kohl’s Black Friday sales? Absolutely not.

While I have listed the disappointments above, Kohl’s Black Friday ad also has some of the best deals this year, including arguably the top Microsoft Xbox One X bundle (See Ad Scan Deal), premium HDTV sale (See Ad Scan Deal) and more. Furthermore, every store has so-called ‘deals’ you should avoid here are Walmart examples, Best Buy examples and Target examples.

In my next Black Friday Vs Series, I will be highlighting the Apple and Samsung deals you should avoid.
