Coach Larry Drew opted to sit Collin Sexton during crunch time of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ thriller of a win over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday.
No big deal, Drew told reporters.
“You can learn just as much sitting over there watching, so you can kind of get a feel and see what other guys are doing,” Drew said, as relayed by Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. “But it’s a long season and we’re going to be in a lot of different situations where he’s going to be allowed to experience some of this stuff.”
Sexton put together a nice game against the Golden State Warriors two nights later — tallying 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting. That included 3-of-3 shooting on 3-pointers.
That’s the good news. The bad is the Cavs were outscored by 20 points with Sexton on the floor.
Then again, when it comes to Cavs vs, Warriors, even LeBron James was capable of having that type of plus-minus.
Anyway, the Cavs’ rookie point guard is averaging 17.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists in the last 10 games. Sexton is playing 33 minutes a game in that span.
In other Cavs news:
- Warriors star Kevin Durant spoke on what it was like to be back in Quicken Loans Arena to faced an entirely different Cavs team. “The energy before the game, after the game,” Durant said of the changes in Cleveland. “There were more media members here the last couple of years. We were talking about that before we ran out on the floor. That was a circus right here during the Finals. You start thinking about the great memories you had, especially the championship.”
- Warriors guard Steph Curry also talked about meeting the Cavs in each of the previous four Finals. “It was historical,” he said. “I’ll definitely sit back on the couch in 10 or 12 years when it’s all over and think about what it was like to play here, and how high the stakes were every time we came into this building.”
- Cavs center Tristan Thompson has been fined $15,000 for actions directed toward fans vs. the Nets, the league announced Thursday. More specifically, Thompson flipped off some hecklers.
